Lectureships
You'll find information and criteria for our lectureships which recognise outstanding contributions to the wider field of anaesthesia.
Any Fellow or member can suggest nominations for consideration on behalf of Council by the Nominations Committee. The Committee normally meets twice yearly although electronic communications may be used if nominees are being considered for specific events or against accelerated timelines. The Secretary to the Committee co-ordinates this process and is the primary point of contact for proposed nominations.

Lectureships
These prestigious lectureships are delivered at appropriate national meetings. They are awarded to established senior clinicians, academic experts or pioneers in their fields who have advanced the science or art of anaesthetic practice. Academic nominees would normally be senior post holders at professorial or readership level.
This lectureship honours the name of Dr Samuel Thompson Rowling and is normally awarded annually on the recommendation of the Events and Professional Development Committee. The award is made possible by an endowed fund given by Mr John Thompson Rowling. The lecture is recognised by a certificate.
This lectureship is awarded by the College on behalf of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia Health Services Research Centre and delivered at an appropriate national meeting. The orations are awarded to established senior clinicians (including non-anaesthetists), academic experts, policy makers or pioneers in the field who have made a significant contribution to advancing the field of Health Services Research in relation to Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, Pain, or Critical Care Medicine. Academic nominees would normally be senior post holders at professorial level with an international reputation in Health Services Research.
This prestigious lecture and title is awarded on the recommendation of the Board of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA). It is in recognition of outstanding contributions to the wider field of anaesthesia in a senior academic or clinician. In the case of an academic it would normally be at a senior lecturer level. The delivery of the lecture will be at a suitable scientific meeting and the title of ‘Macintosh Professor’ is bestowed for one year from the date of Council’s approval of the award. This award is made by application and is advertised.
The Rank Fund is intended to pay for overseas lecturers to speak at major College meetings and visit other parts of the country to give formal lectures, undertake informal teaching and/or to discuss research visits. Visits normally last at least a week and include visits to at least three centres. Lectureships are not awarded every year. It is helpful but not essential if proposals include suggestions for hosting and visits to other centres.
This lectureship is to honour the name of Lord Alfred Webb-Johnson, past President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The lectureship is awarded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng).
The oration is delivered at an appropriate national meeting on the theme of perioperative medicine. The annual award alternates between an anaesthetist and surgeon. The oration is awarded to established senior clinicians, academic experts or pioneers in their fields and is recognised by a certificate.
The nominations process is the same as for those directly considered by the RCoA Nominations Committee and RCSEng Nominations Committee.
