Fellowships

Information and criteria for our awards of Honorary Fellowship and Fellow ad eundem.

Any Fellow or member can suggest nominations for consideration on behalf of Council by the Nominations Committee. The Committee normally meets twice yearly although electronic communications may be used if nominees are being considered for specific events or against accelerated timelines. The Secretary to the Committee co-ordinates this process and is the primary point of contact for proposed nominations.

Fellowships

From 2018, the categories of Fellowship by Election and Honorary Fellowship have been combined into a single category; the Honorary Fellowship. The award of our Fellowship is considered for practitioners across the world who have made sustained and significant contributions to the practice of anaesthesia or relevant science, critical care medicine or pain medicine. This activity has to be at an internationally active level and normally sustained for at least ten years. Honorary Fellowships may be awarded to non-medically qualified practitioners such as scientists with a similar level of achievement and to members of the Royal Family or others who have furthered the work of the College in a sustained way.

Evidence through the nominations guidance and proposal form should document this activity and the outcome of such work. Whilst there are no limits to the number of awards at this level it is unusual to award more than two or three a year.

This Fellowship is open to doctors practising in anaesthesia, critical care or pain medicine in the UK and hold a substantive consultant post at time of application, but do not hold the RCoA Fellowship in anaesthesia and who meet the criteria as set out in the accompanying guidance document. The applications for this category are approved by the RCoA Nominations Committee.

The application form and guidance for this Fellowship is available here.

Application forms received by 31 August 2024 will be considered at the March Nominations Committee. However, this is subject to the number of applications received and the agenda capacity for each Committee meeting so your application might be moved to a later date. If this is the case the Membership Engagement team or secretary of the Nominations Committee will notify you.
