Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

In Sheffield Gould was house surgeon at Jessop Hospital for Women, then resident house surgeon and senior house surgeon, at the Royal Hospital before moving south to be house physician at the West London Hospital. For two years (1932-4) he was a surgeon with the Canada Pacific Steamship Co before being appointed honorary anaesthetist at Golden Square (now Royal National ENT) & Royal Dental Hospitals, institutions he continued to work in after the inception of the NHS and until his retirement in 1969.

Professional interests and activities

Private practice was a major focus, but he served a term as a member of the AAGBI Council (1942-4) and was assistant editor of Anaesthesia from its first issue (1946) until 1960. He also made his own contributions to the literature.

Other biographical information

A quiet man, he had many cultural interests, being a connoisseur with exquisite taste and profound knowledge of antique furniture, paintings, jade & porcelain. Predeceased by his wife, he was survived by their two sons.
