Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

Early appointments were RMO Harrow Hospital, house physician Middlesex Hospital, RMO Brighton Borough Sanitorium and assistant medical officer at St Luke’s Hospital, Chelsea. On the outbreak of WW2 he volunteered as a medical officer in the RAF, serving at home and abroad, and ending with the rank of Squadron Leader. After the war he was anaesthetist to Beverley Road Hospital in Hull until appointed senior registrar at Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1949, and then in the thoracic unit of Shotley Bridge Hospital, before becoming consultant to the Winchester group of hospitals, based at Basingstoke, in 1951. Between 1968 and 1974 he was involved with the commissioning of the new Basingstoke District Hospital, a difficult time with surgical services spread between the new and older hospitals. He retired in 1976.

Professional interests and activities

He took a great interest in postgraduate education, initiating the Postgraduate Medical Centre in Basingstoke (it is named after him) and serving as postgraduate tutor for 1974-5. He was a vice-president of the anaesthetic section of the RSM for 1980/1. Meticulous in the care of his patients, he made a point of seeing them all pre-operatively.

Other biographical information

Married to Magda, they had a daughter, Tessa. He and his wife shared an interest in riding, and his other interests included music (he sang with the Lodden singers and Basingstoke Choral Society), sailing, walking and reading. A keen cricketer, he scored for the Basingstoke second eleven and, on occasion, the Hampshire county team.
